Doctoral Certificate in Technology Commercialization

The Doctoral Certificate in Technology Commercialization prepares PhD students to apply their research beyond academia. This certificate will be anchored in the Adoption Readiness Levels (ARL), developed by Professor Vanessa Chan while at the U.S. Department of Energy, as a complement to the Technology Readiness Levels (TRL). ARL is a framework that articulates market risks that must be overcome for technology to be commercialized in the real world. Through coursework in technology translation and entrepreneurship, plus a practicum tied to the dissertation, students learn to articulate the societal and practical relevance of their work and to design evidence-based commercialization pathways. Graduates of this program will be better prepared to lead in both academic and applied research settings.

Students can apply here when their thesis proposal has been accepted and they must have the support of their thesis advisor.

  • Each student’s committee must also include one member from industry and opportunities to do work at the industry location.
